Hike On The Barnegat Rail Route

Taking advantage of the spring like weather my wife and I checked out the Barnegat Rail Route which had plenty of hikers and bikers having the same idea that we did.  The 7 mile trail is paved with asphalt or crushed stone allowing for easy biking and hiking and follows the old Central Railroad tracks.  This was originally the Toms River & Waretown Railroad later known as the Toms River & Barnegat Railroad.  Built during the national railroad boom of the post Civil War and lasting until it's demise as many short line Railroads did during the end of the 19th century.  The hike is on flat terrain and strewn with many signs that depict the different species of trees, plants and landmarks.  There is plenty of parking near the entrance of the park's access.  Visit www.oceancountyparks.org for more information on this great trail that's right in our backyard!
